Disappointing

September 13, 2009 | No Comments Posted

GOD DAM FUCKING FUDGE PACKERS!

The Good

Our defense was strong.  The line had a good push and applied good pressure to Rodgers.  Our secondary didn't make many plays but was not bad.  When our starters were all in we were a force to be reckoned with.  Even after the interceptions, we didn't give up much.

Our offense came to the second half prepared.  Out of the (second) gate we drove well.  Ron Turner got his play-calling right and Jay looked like what we expected of him.  Our o-line started standing up to the pressure and Forte was making some good moves.

Cutler can block and take people out when he gets intercepted.

Devin Hester's TD was beautiful.  They should connect a lot like that.

The Bad

Urlacher (MLB), Omiyale (LG), Tinoisiamoa (WLB), and Truman Mcbride (CB) were all hurt.  Our D slowed down noticably after Urlacher went out.  If he's gone for a while, we're in trouble.

Cutler's final INT.  Bad on the receiver, and on Cutler.  He struggled with the pressure, I think.  There's no excuse for that.

Our o-line in the first half.  The Packers were climbing all over us.  Cutler had no time and showed it by hurrying.

Receivers in general.  Struggled on small or intermediate routes.  Big ones we've already done better than last year, but that doesn't move the chains alone.

Forte.  A lot of this was the line, but he seemed to be hesitating constantly.  He didn't do that last year, and that was why he was so successful.  He needs to show he still has the vision.

Where was Olsen all game? He's supposed to basically be our best receiver, but was either afk or double covered well.  He and Cutler need to connect or it's going to be a long season.

The Ugly

The special teams call.  I understand they were trying to catch a Packer still on the field, but they needed to get the play off much sooner if that was what they were going for.  And Garrett Wolfe up the middle is never a good call.  Our special teams are usually our best aspect (last year they almost singlehandedly won us the games at Soldier Field against Green Bay and Minnessota).  They need improvement after tonight, because they did nothing.  No good returns, no blocked punts/field goals and this blown call.

Garrett Wolfe's blocking.  He got jumped over.  That's a college thing.  If it happens in the NFL, it's time for you to go to the UFL or Canadian league.

Cutler's first half.  All 3 INTs were pathetic.  Before the first he had 2 near picks, but he couldn't settle down.  The one at Jolly's gut was horrible.  He made up for it by settling down in the second half, but he might as well have sat on the sidelines for the first half of the game.

We need to throttle the Steelers next week or we're in trouble.

The birthday party was awesome.  We ran dry relatively early, but the birthday boys had a great time and we recovered all of our costs and then some.  I think I'm going to get something actually nice to drink today, instead of Keystone.  It's standard college beer and I'm adjusted to it so it tastes fine, but nice stuff is nice for a reason.

The Illini are poised to crush ISU.

My mom and dad are coming up and watching the game and tailgating.  I'll see them some today, which'll be cool and all.  They're bringing my little brother, who is 15, too.  I'm going to try and sneak him in to the student section.  He's going to tailgate with me and my friends hopefully.  Not sure if I'll have him drink, cause he has to go home with my parents and my mom wouldn't be too happy with me, but maybe a little.  We'll see.

If we lose this game, our school will collectively kill itself.

I have no idea what's going on tonight.  Game's at 6, so it'll be most of the evening but no specific victory celebrations are planned yet that I know of.  Again, we'll see.

Tomorrow is rest up, school work and NFL.  Can't wait.

Apartment #23

September 11, 2009 | No Comments Posted

I'm 1/1 in game picks so far.  It was a very entertaining start to the season, but now I'm just focused on Sunday.  My Illini do play tomorrow though, definitely going to watch them stomp all over ISU.  Santonio Holmes was expected to give me 6 points but gave me 19.  I'm going to kill in fantasy this week.

But I'm not going to just blog about football on here.

This year I'm living in a 4 bedroom apartment.  Lots of friends in rooms nearby because our fraternity house is getting renovated and we're more or less all here or at a senior house.  My roommates are the same guy I lived with last year, who I get along with really well, and 2 other guys I didn't know that well until this year started.  One is kinda quiet, but very nice.  He's a cool guy and I've enjoyed getting to know him.  The other is a complete nutcase.

He always follows us around, at parties or around the apartment.  He's constantly whining about how we won't go with him to the grocery store or anything, even though we just went and asked him if he wanted to go.  He's very clean about some things, but his body hygiene is horrible.  Trust me, I'm lucky enough to share a bathroom with him and it's gross.  He creeps on girls.  When we talk about our apartment to any friends, they always ask how he is because they know it must suck to live with him.

In short, I definitely wish I'd gotten to know him before signing the lease.  But still, we have a great location and needed a fourth guy.  He's bearable, especially considering we can always walk down to another room and just hang with them until he goes away.  Just would be nice to have someone I like.

Otherwise, the apartment has been great.  It's 4 guys so as you can imagine it's a pigsty.  Grocery shopping and cooking suck, but the food is still good.  Beer is constant in copious amounts.  We have yet to pay bills, but we're going to take care of it Sunday.

As for the frat, recruitment is going well.  We've had a lot of fun events like a wings night, poker night and two games of broomball.  If you don't know what broomball is, look into it, it's awesome.  Wednesday night I played fucked up and it was very entertaining.  Hardly hurt and I was able to shove some bigger guys a little bit more than usual.  Tailgating for the football game tomorrow.

Tonight we have a birthday party.  Going to be wild, maybe like 5 kegs and 150 people.  Hopefully we can make some money too.

National Fuckyeah League

Added Risk today.  It's unaltered from the form that lost WAFFathon 07, but I still have to say it's one of my most fondly remembered of my fics, along with Shelter Number Nine.  It's a completely different fic than you usually see, and I like it because of that.

Enough about a fic I haven't read or worked on in 1.5 years.  It's football time!  As I type the pregame is getting started.  I've become a diehard Bears fan in this last year, and I'm convinced that we can win the NFC North this year if not the whole thing.  Jay fucking Cutler baby!

Every week of the season I'm going to predict games and maybe talk about my fantasy team a little bit.  The predictions are at the bottom.

My fantasy league is a 12 team 1 QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 1 WR/RB/TE, 1 Kicker, 1 D/ST league my fraternity is running.  At QB this week I'm starting Matt Hasselback over Aaron Rodgers.  I'm convinced the Packers are going to lose to the Bears, so I have to pick Hasselback.  Anyway, he's going against the Rams.  WR I'm pretty thin after Larry Fitzgerald, and he may be Madden cursed.  Bernard Berrian and Santonio Holmes are my other 2 WR, with Nate Washington as a back-up.  Looking for a good game for Holmes tonight.  RB I have Clinton Portis, and I'm starting Felix Jones over Jonathan Stewart because he's been hurt and I like Jones.  Hopefully he just gets the carries.  TE I have Visanthe Shiancoe, Ricky Williams at my WE/RB/TE, Robbie Gould at K, and the Giants at D/ST.  Right now I'm expected to lose week 1 by one point.  I think I'm decent overall, especially strong at QB.  Need to trade one of those guys after their bye week so I can get some more WR/RB/TE help.  D and K should be good.

It's my first time playing fantasy football, so we'll see how it goes.

Friday tomorrow, going to be so awesome.  Class 12-2 only, so maybe I'll go out tonight if something is going on, but friday night we're throwing something for 2 of my friend's near simultaneous birthdays.  Should be awesome.

Now for my predictions.

Tennessee at Pittsburgh Pittsburgh   Detroit at New Orleans New Orleans (0-18 for the Lions)   NY Jets at Houston Houston
Miami at Atlanta Atlanta   Denver at Cincinnati Cincinnati   Minnesota at Cleveland Minnesota (unfortunately)   Jacksonville at Indianapolis Indianapolis   Dallas at Tampa Bay Dallas   Philadelphia at Carolina Philadelphia   Kansas City at Baltimore Baltimore   San Francisco at Arizona Arizona   St. Louis at Seattle Seattle   Washington at NY Giants NY Giants   Chicago at Green Bay Chicago (duh, packers suck)   Buffalo at New England New England

San Diego at Oakland   San Diego

Return of the King

Life's been different for me.

When I last blogged here, I think I'd just turned 18.  I was going into the second semester of my senior year of high school.  My life was more or less routed through EFO and fanfiction.  I had just gotten thuroughly decimated in WAFFathon, my entry Risk seeming particularly un-WAFFy.  I was taking charge of the EFO QC and hoping to revive it.

I spent a lot of time on that site and in this community in general.  Writing, reviewing, talking to people.  4-5 months of EFO drove me right out of there.  Drama, lose of interest and approaching college were the major reasons.  So I left.

15 months later, I'm a nearly 20 year old college student living in an apartment complex surrounded by my frat brothers.  We party hard weekend and week-in.  My major is Integrative Biology, and my grades need to be better if I'm going to make it to dentistry school.  Shrug.

I'm not really sure how I made it here.  The distance between senior-in-high-school-year-recluse-who-spends-all-of-his-time-on-anime-websites and sophmore-party-hard-sports-fanatic-drink-til-you-pass-out seems like it should've been a longer, harder journey.  But it's all been pretty downhill.

I'm happy for the most part.

But I still love to read, and maybe write if I ever find something worth it.  So I'll be around DS.
