The Beast that shouted I . .

Future tense Chapter one “ The Beast that shouted I . . ”

It is the year 75 of the cosmic era, and with the one year anniversary of the end of the second Bloody Valentine war approaching the eyes of the peoples of man kind are turned inward. The scares of war still fester, even as leaders on earth and off labor to continue the past years peace.

Some where along the scarred cost of the former nation of Japan the ghosts of a shamed past walk through the bones of Tokyo 3.

“ So long waiting, for love, for duty, for simple compassion. ”

Another voice almost an echo of the first, or was it the other way around?

“ What is time really? We knew this was coming, if nothing else. We need to be ready, one way or another for what she brings. ”

The first voice returned with a determined whisper.

“ Death, as ever, she brings death. ”

In the moon light the first voice is relieved. Rei Ayanami, in the form of the school girl she was almost a century ago. A step behind her in her shadow the second voice speaks.

“ Thats not fair Rei, she was never Gendo. I'll deal with him so you don't have to, I promise. ”

**

In a wide orbit around Mars the warship Eternal is enjoying a rare peace time cruse.

Kira Yamato floated a feet above the floor wrapped in blanket, pondering his situation.

“ How exactly are we getting away with this ? ”

Lacus Clyne's head pop out from under the blanket, as she spoke in her normal happy tone of voice.

“ It seems when not in war time, a ZAFT ship is allowed a relatively easy first mission to ensure the ship as s whole is working properly. Mr. Waltfeld was happy to let us us come along for as a wedding gift. ”

He knew just how ridicules it was that they got to do this just because it was Lacus Clyne that asked the counsel. Kira laughed as he spoke.

“ So after years of operation and two wars, we get to see if the ship works right, and with a Captain thats technically not in ZAFT anymore? Haha! I think I'm not going to complain. Its rare we get to get away from it all, with your schedule and all. ”

“ You'd better not! ”

Faint laughter echoed down that hall, while on the bridge Andrew Waltfeld pulled up another image of the planet below them.

“ Sand's a bit red, but I think I could get used to that. Better gravity then the moon, also nice. This far out solar power would be an issue, and the dust would make it to hard to maintain. Some uranium and i think we'd be set. ”

One of the bridge crew spoke up.

“Sir, what are you talking about?”

Waltfeld smiled as he replied.

“ Just pondering making myself king of the red sands of Mars. With the war over, and relations with earth still tense it's only a matter of time before the Plants move out further, and try to find another place to get large amounts of raw materials. Regardless of what they find in the asteroid belt, Mars is the easy choice for a colony. But don't mind me, I just miss the desert. ”

He reached for his coffee and mused internally.

And no canned coffee on my planet either, punishable by exile to earth or the PLANTS with the other canned coffee drinking barbarians!

His wasn't the only happy thought interrupted by the ship listing 90 degrees to port, and collision alarm blaring over the ship's speakers. Waltfeld saw his bionic replacement hand go floating past as he realized he was on the ceiling.

“ What in the hell! Status report, NOW?! ”

The confused bridge crew struggled to return to their controls, franticly trying to answer the Captains question.

“ Two large objects just passed within between 12 and 30 feat of the hull. Nothing on any warning system, manual or automatic before that. Their inertia almost pulled us into the atmosphere. Nature of the objects is unknown. ”

He floated back into his chair and used his remaining hand to punch a console.

“ Looks like the heat shielding held up fine, get me locations on our to surprise visitors.”

“ Already done sir, their at the foot of Olympus Mons. Both targets are . . reading as organic in nature . . ”

Grabbing his wayward hand as it floated past, he raised an eyebrow.

“ Well then, check on our guests, then prep Gaia for launch. ”

Deep under the Orb union, the nation's oldest prison looked like a hotel room from another century. The nation's long held neutral standing prompted the United Nations to store certain things on its soil thought too dangerous to keep elsewhere.

The last active samples of the lethal Polio, and HIV viruses, the original UN charter, and the most hated man in human history. Gendo Ikari, as if defying time, and God, still alive and serving his life sentence for war crimes directly resulting in the 3rd Impact event that preceded the resource shortages that gave birth to the Cosmic Era calendar and world of today. Somehow, for reasons unknown medical science, he appeared the same as he did the day he was arrested. Save the addition of a serpent headed cane used to make up for knee injury suffered at the hands of Pope Justice IV. A 12 year old zealot that offered him a billion dollars in Templar gold and the absolution of his sins if he would only admit to the world he'd been damned by Christ to walk the earth till Judgment day. Justice IV had been the last sitting Pope, and he died more then 20 years ago, Ikari however remains.

Ikari sat at a desk older then most of his jailers. Kind people these days, that actually allowed anyone with observer status at the UN to visit him with an appointment, or sometimes even historians if they can get favors with the security counsel. One young man named George Glen, sent by no less than Ritsuko Akagi, had collaborated with him on a book regarding the ethical application of genetic engineering in regard to humans. The Modern Hippocrates wasn't a big seller, until after George Glen outed himself as a coordinator. Gendo always knew the man was hiding something.

Gendo was glad to hear, Ritsuko had done well in her later years. Helping to create the coordinators, and, according to George Glen, being so close to the first dozen, they called her grand mother.

He flipped though the pages of The Modern Hippocrates, wondering how after two wars, what his old friend would think of the world they lived in today, as a ghost from his past appeared with a whisper.

“ She has returned. ”

Looking over his shoulder he saw the impossible image of Rei Ayanami, had she lived another decade or more. Gendo had long since grown to hate the word impossible.

“ You look like your mother, Rei. ”

She stared at him with those alien red eyes of hers, and responded in a tone of voice with more anger then she was once capable of.

“ I don't have one of those, you grew me in a vat to use and discard when you where through with me. Now, once they realize what is going on, they'll be coming for you. Be ready. ”

Gendo replied with almost a smile as she was still so transparent to him.

“ Then will you finally discard me? ”

“ When I'm done with you. ”

**

Kira trailed behind Waltfeld, half dressed, and he walked to his Mobile Suit .

“ Give me five minutes for a preflight check, and I'll go with you. ”

Kid, this is supposed to be your time away from things, just you and the wife. Probably the last time you'll get the chance for a while considering the lives you lead. Now those to unknowns are one of two things, random space junk that happened to hit a blind spot in our sensors that fighting two wars didn't let us in on, or it's some stealth shielded weapon that's damaged and doesn't know the war's over. Either way its my job to deal with it. Go back to your wife, and enjoy your time off. I'll take care of it.

Kira finally caught up as he prepared to board the Gaia.

“ Listen, you're probably right, just be careful. I don't want to have to explain anything happening to you to Lacus. ”

Andrew took a moment to fix his helmet in place, before responding.

“ Glad to see you're used to the idea of thinking like a man with higher responsibilities, Kira, thats a good sign. ”

The younger man retorted.

“ I'm glad you think so, now give me 5 minutes for a pre-flight check or I'm spending my honeymoon in the dog house. ”

Andrew considered having to cut his impromptu trip to the sand short by the help, but then again there was the possibility that what was down there was something important, and something his energy shield-less mecha might not be able to take care of.

“ Alright, it'll take me that long to calibrate my hand for Martian gravity anyway, suit up. ”

**

The pair fell to Mars with with an ease imposable in Earths thicker atmosphere. Gaia and Freedom two weapons from the last war, fast approaching the red sands of Mars. Landing with a crash, Gaia in its four legged alt mode set off across the sand at breakneck speed.

“ Freedom to Gaia, are you getting a weak signal from up the mountain? ”

Waltfeld punched a few buttons on his com panel, and got the signal. Kira spoke before he could say a word.

“ What the heck is Evangelion unit 1 ? ”

From up the high atop Olympus Mons, a roar went out through the planet's thin atmosphere. A burst of white hot light ripped down from the sky like the rage of Zeus down from on high. In the heartbeat between the roar, and the impact of the blast, Freedom engaged it's shields and stood its ground.

Gaia took advantage of the light gravity to jump skyward and fire a volley of blaster fire. Waltfeld's mind began to race, struggling with one thought that might lose this battle. Kira has no idea what they're fighting.

“ Kira, pull back! This isn't a mobile suit! ”

Before he could respond, the attacker barrelled down from above. In preparation, Kira disengaged the light shields and drew his beam saber, intent on bringing this fight to a quick end. He didn't hear the older pilot's warning over the sound of his own heartbeat.

The huge green scaled monster had a pair of claw-like hands, and raptor like head. It lunged forward, claw extended. Kira parried the blow with his sword, fully expecting to take off the hand. His disappointment came in the form of what appeared to be a tight forcefield, with an odd octagonal pattern. It held back the full force of the saber, though, much to Kira's surprise, the armor under the field where he struck seemed to boil like flesh under fire.

“ What the hell? ”

Andrew held his finger on the trigger, the target lock already set, as the beast clawed into the chest of Kira's Gundam. For once he hoped he didn't have a kill shot as he fired. The blast impacted on the back of the monster's head. It's protective energy field gave way with surprising ease, burning a hole through its skull. The cross-shaped explosion was bright enough to be seen from Earth ripped a hole in the surface of Mars. As if foreshadowing the return the war god himself, the solar system shook.

Dawn of the following day. In the ORB union UN embassy.

Gendo sat waiting for his visitor.

As he entered the room he tried to size up the young man. Tall dark hair, and young[,] though he was at least old enough to shave.

Well thats one improvement at least.

Mr Ikari, My name is Athrun Zala and I've been charged with bringing you before the UN Special Security Council.

Gendo saw Rei's ethereal form hovering over him.

To the throne of souls it is then. ”

Next: full realization

Ld got me to try a crossover blame him.

Future tense: chapter two full realization

Seele, throne of souls, secret masters of the fates of men, are nothing but a memory from a shamed past. What remains is only the UN Security Council, and, truth be told, none of the states they represent are older then the man that now sits before them.

Human civilization, he is told, reaches out beyond the orbit of the moon, with probes and expeditions just beginning to reach the outer solar system. One such mission, like a Victorian hunter taking his wife see the sands of Africa, had been arranged by some manner of pop star that doubled as a UN good will ambassador. For some reason he didn't grasp, she'd been allowed to do this with a war ship containing several mobile suit class mecha. Her husband was a pilot of one of these craft, a normally illegal nuclear powered n-jammer enabled war machine. He piloted said unit to no small renown in the last two wars and was all of nineteen. This was the force that had encountered and bested the first returning Angel since 3rd impact. Gendo's head would spin at the absurdity of it all but he'd fought a war with fourteen year-olds.

“ Are you listening Mr Ikari? ”

The young “woman” at the head of the council who spoke was the heir of Uzumi Nara Athha, and, unless his math was off, should be about the same age as the officer sent to get him from his cell. Child warriors abounded, it seemed.

“ Forgive an old man that's understandably behind the times, but your detection technology can register an AT field, and the PLANTS encircle the earth at Lagrange points yes? ”

She answered in a tone that reflected her annoyance at what was, to her, a grade school question.

“ Yes. ”

Gendo rolled his cane in his palm as he continued.

“ Well then, we have a detection grid that can pinpoint an Angel at any point in the earth sphere so long as everyone cooperates. Earth is fine, the PLANTS are for the moment fine. We must do what technology did not permit before, meet the enemy on our own terms. ”

She responded in a heartbeat and to his estimation utterly un-intimidated.

“ And the reason we don't let them come to us ? ”

“ Without an AT field there is no defense. We are then left with two options, resurrect the Evangelion, or attack using the mobile suit technology we do have. Now, last I was informed, all the cell samples needed to grow an Eva were lost in the aftermath of the last impact. Failing that, Operation Yashima showed us we do not always require an Evangelion to destroy an Angel. The engagement was at such a range that the none of NERV's assets were close enough to overcome its defenses. Pure force simply overwhelmed it, that is our only salvation. ”

The “girl” replied.

“ We should of course take the advice of our almost 150 year old sensei. ”

Gendo took a deep breath before speaking. He sounded like he'd rehearsed it, and perhaps had.

“ Yes, how is the old man still alive? Perhaps the Devil simply doesn't want the competition? He must be working for one of them I bet! Allow me to inform those of you not up on your history, as to the mind set of the Angel. It has one thought, that is all. It may adapt to overcome opposition certainly, but it can never alter its course. I am incapable of being an enemy agent, for the sole reason that I am a human being, and as such I am an infection to be purged nothing more. Subterfuge and infiltration are not a weapons of this enemy. ”

She snapped back, intent on bringing down the monster Ikari.

“ Remind us again what is a Nephilim? ”

Gendo had had enough. Uzumi was a good man, but this Cagalli girl had made up her mind before walking into the room.

“ Nephilim are the prototypes for every post human that followed., though primitive by the standards of today, and unable to exist without either an S2 organ or life long meta-biological maintenance. Now mind you, that's a small price to pay for something that could generate an anti-AT field powerful enough to sterilize the entire Japanese archipelago in under an hour. Now can we please dispense with worry over the boogie man that lives in the basement and turn rather to the impending extinction of humans and coordinators both? ”

Rei watched silently.

**

Mu La Flaga walked into the ready room and plopped into a chair next to Athrun like he was getting a spot by the TV.

“ So, your lady seemed pissed when last we spoke. ”

Athrun looked up and sounded a bit frazzled by the question.

“ Umm were kind of . . .Meyrin and I . . What am I talking about this at work for again? ”

“ Hay, when the head of Orb tells me to shoot someone twice in the chest and once in the brain, it's business related these days. Not that I'm complaining they don't care here that I'm an ex POW / mental patient and deserter. Oh, and she lent me her mobile suite again -- can I get some help buffing the thing?”

Athrun's face cracked a smile.

“ Colonel Ramius is in space, and you've got no one to pester, do you? ”

He smiled.

“ So we've got the man that made the Pope cry loaded on the transport for Germany. You read the file on that guy? He helped create the tech that had me moonlighting as Neo Roanoke. Something about using it to program massed cloned Eva pilots. ”

Athrun sighed.

“ The e-project, NERV, Gendo Ikari, those words just sound ominous like a magic spell that opens a secret door. Something we should keep closed. ”

Mu continued.

“ Figures you'd know about all of this. Well, it was bound to come back to bite us again, but I'm more worried about Kira. At least he had his mobile suit... Why was that again? Stalkers on Mars or something? ”

Athrun smiled.

“ He doesn't want it in the wrong hands, so he either has it locked up, or with him. I'll admit that's probably harder for him in ZAFT then it is for me. We need to get out there; they didn't go looking for a fight. ”

Mu smiled again as he quipped.

“ Pays to know the Chief Representative. What's the final count on pilots? ”

“ Four. ”

“ The Atlantic Federation is just sending the ship then? Well at least combined with the Junk guilds genesis unit, we can make the trip in a month. Tell me you got Shin and Lunamaria. ”

Athrun tried to sound like what he was saying didn't bother him.

Lunamaria's Impulse uses a recharge system ZAFT wouldn't allow on the ship. I had to replace her with Yzak Joule, he's a good pilot.

Mu didn't seem to hide his feelings.

“ The guy with the ego, great. Did you at least get that Destroy they had left over from the moon? ”

“ It was all I could do to get Morgenroete to hand over the Red Duel. It doesn't even have an n-jammer filter – We cant test it till we are out of Earth's gravity well. ”

Mu seemed to drop the act at last.

“ Now for the big question, Admiral : do we get out there, grab Kira and pack up his wife and send her home? ”

Athrun rolled his eyes.

Now I'm in charge.

“ The transport we are being lent is NOT meant for combat. As it is we are using empty crew quarters for storing spare parts. Even if Eternal is crewed with a handful she left port with more supplies then we'll be taking with us. Our best course of action is to get out there, put Lacus on the Argos and send them both home. ”

Mu retorted.

“ And if representative Clyne doesn't want to end her honeymoon early? ”

“ The thing we do need to concern ourselves with is can they survive another attack while we are in route. As for anything else, I quit ZAFT : what's she going to do fire me? ”

**

In orbit of the red planet.

Lacus shivered in the cold as she looked down on the surface of Mars through a cracked porthole.

“ Australis one, they once called it the home of the last rational humans. During the third summer of love, at the dawn of the first Coordinator boom, they left earth behind. As the race war began, the trade ships from Mars got fewer and fewer. By the time Junius Seven fell, and the world broke, Mars hadn't heard a human voice in eight years. It's so sad seeing people reach so far, and come so close . . . ”

Warm hands wrapped around her waist and pulled her in tight. Kira spoke.

“ Good news. Help is on the way. Athrun is leading some kind of special forces group. Somehow the message said they will be here in half the time it took us. ”

She responded.

“ It feels like grave robbing, doesn't it?”

For a heart beat Kira didn't know what to say. The tone in her voice was one of fear, he'd never know her to be anything but confident.

“ The blast the creature made when it . . .died ... hit Eternal because of its low orbit. We don't have much of a choice, because without this we won't survive till help arrives. These people came here to build a place where they could live. If what they left behind can give us a chance, then they'd want us to take what we needed. ”

For a heartbeat Lacus could see a red eyed girl looking back at her through cracked glass. She shivered in the cold.

**

Gendo looked out the window, marveling at natural sunlight for the first time in half a century. The look of a cloud, the sight of cities from 5000 feet, and the image of an angry teenager facing him across the aisle where things he'd thought to never see again.

“ Madam Representative, I'm surprised to see you here. ”

Something about the look in her eyes brought back the old memories. NERV in those days, and his own shameful attempt at grabbing the godhead for all the wrong reasons. Humanity under his direction had spent itself in the war with the Angels, and had nothing left in the end. If not for Rei, nothing would have been required. Then again this girl, and her generation would never have been born had mad old Ikari had his way. Yui, he learned too late, had disapproved.

“ The German MAGI is still on line after all these years. All outside lines were cut during the resource wars, but it was never recorded if any of the base's satellite communication gear was disabled when the base itself was scrubbed. It might be watching, but, truth be told, with an N2 mine for a self destruct no one wanted to try and force the issue. We are going to need to know what you know about that MAGI system, Mr Ikari. ”

Gendo wondered what the girl would look like in a plug suit, and if she'd fare better then his son in that long ago war. Yes, he decided, her father prepared her for her role in life.

“ What does history tell you about Keel Lorenz? ”

She responded quick, and sharply.

“ Why don't we just skip this part, and enlighten me yourself. You did know the man. ”

One day perhaps I can play a role other than the villain. Maybe that will be enough for Yui.

“ When you get old, nights get long, and when death approaches, some people . . .except it others go to war with it. The e-project required funding, and Keel was dying of cancer. I promised the man a way to come out on the other side of death. He had spent his life as a power broker on the Trilateral Commission, and loved being the shadow behind thrones. He never married, no children, his hobbies were chess and poker. Keel liked to say one was how people think the world world works, and the other is how is really does. The man once gambled with a beggar in a park over the fate of his homeland. The beggar, of course, thought he was another mental patient on a day pass walking in the sun. Keel cut off post 2nd impact aid to his homeland the next morning. The man he played spent the rest of his life ranting about Satan on the subway. ”

Cagalli responded in a dry tone of voice.

“ Are you implying that unlike the MAGI prototype you dealt with that had three aspects of the personality of the mind it was modelled after, Keel didn't have that much of a personality to build on? ”

Gendo Replied

“ I'm saying I have no idea what's in that third MAGI unit down there yes. ”
